My Training
I earned my doctoral degree in clinical psychology at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. GSAPP is renowned for its class-leading Doctor of Psychology program where I was taught and supervised by Dr Nancy McWilliams, a pioneer in the field of psychodynamic psychotherapy. I completed clinical training externships at two university counseling centers, where I practiced short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy, and at the New York City National Institute for the Psychotherapies Training Institute where I conducted psychodynamic psychotherapy. I also completed externships in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, where I practiced cognitive-behavioral (CBT), behavioral and supportive therapy, and in a school-based mental health center.
I completed my year-long internship at the New York Harbor Veterans Affairs Medical Center. There I worked with returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans with PTSD and other adjustment difficulties. I also provided assessment, psychotherapy, and ongoing support to cancer-affected patients and families through an outpatient oncology unit. Additionally, I provided clinical supervision to a doctoral psychology student.
My Experience
Upon graduation, I worked at an outpatient mental health treatment facility that focused on working with mood disorders, psychotic disorders, and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender clients. In this setting I strengthened my cognitive-behavioral and behavioral therapy skills. I also completed intensive training in dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for disorders of self-regulation conducted by Marsha Linehan's Behavioral Tech. Additionally, I supervised talented doctoral students from The New School for Social Research.
Concurrently, I worked part time at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, where I was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry. At Downstate I counseled ethnically diverse medical and other health professions students. Predominant student issues included anxiety, panic, attention and focus, and study skills. I worked in consultation with Michael F. Myers, MD, an expert in physician health and self-care for professionals.
I then opened a private practice in Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY, where I worked with clients ranging in age from 18 to adults, of varied ethnicities and sexualities, and in a wide range of professions. I have worked with clients employed or studying in numerous fields, including education, creative and technical fields, medicine and mental health, law, business and service industries including marketing, advertising, hospitality, and finance. I quickly built my practice by being responsive, flexible, and caring, and by helping clients get results. I next opened a second practice office in Center City, Philadelphia, PA. I continue to benefit from training in additional topics, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and Internal Family Systems, and I regularly seek consultation with colleagues regarding my clinical work. I enjoy learning from my diverse clientele as I expand my skills to include new clinical populations.
